From His Father's Workshop to Hurricane Alley

In a small village, Mon Repos, in St. Lucia, Mark Vitalis didn't learn construction from textbooks; he learned it from the rhythm of a hand-saw and the smell of fresh cedar. He was surrounded by men who lived to build—his father was the village's master carpenter and, by necessity, its coffin-maker. Mark and his three brothers all followed in those footsteps, each eventually becoming master builders in their own right.

Within a broader apprenticeship where he learned every trick of the trade, Mark was often entrusted with a profound responsibility: serving as the "measuring stick." He would be asked to lie inside unfinished coffins to ensure the dimensions were precise to the millimeter.
